THE LEHMAN TRILOGY
"Scenic designer Julia Hayes Welch provides a visual punch worthy of an epic. Diverging from the Broadway production’s sleek glass cage, Welch employs striking white vertical beams that morph from city skyline to cathedral of capitalism, terrifying and awe-inspiring."

"The set from Julia Hayes Welch is deceptively simple and magnificent. [...] And what Welch brought in, when combined with fantastic lighting from Andrew D. Smith, and projections from Mike Tutaj, is stunning as this tiny sparse space comes alive."

THE REVOLUTIONISTS
"ArtsWest’s set was simple and elegant: a raised wooden stage, fronting a backdrop of red ribbons knotted into stripes. [The] set and costuming created a cohesive and decidedly feminine aesthetic (whatever that means). At first glance, the stage [was] a clean, sanitized front that covered, or maybe highlighted, the bloody reality underneath."

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
"First off: scenic design, led by Julia Hayes Welch- wow. Stepping into the theater you’re hit with a stunning recreation of a mundane school gym. Offsetting this mundanity is the set’s vibrant coloring, sharp lines, and slightly skewed perspective; it’s like a cartoon come to life. And that beautifully compliments the story of PUTNAM."

SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER
"Such a creative and unique use of the space, plus an aesthetic I've never seen before but loved from top to bottom."
"This set definitely aroused curiosity and established a mood of whimsy from the beginning with its taxidermy animal heads (wearing party hats) mounted on the walls, and loud, colorful plaid floor. Blue open window-like squares that made up walls that were multi-leveled, gave the image of deeper space to the stage and the openness allowed the audience to witness entrances and exits, that was an added bonus to the action on center stage."

"Incredible use of space! The set was just perfect and I loved the way they built an entire apartment, but removed the walls and left only the pipes. Not to mention how many working elements existed onstage (fridge, stove, sink!)"
"Perfection!"
"The pipes surrounding the set were so well done. And the working kitchen? It was brilliant. Added so much to the feeling of eavesdropping on these intimate conversations."
"The set was spectacular, including a working stove and sink, so the actors actually cook dinner during the play, which was amazing. The set design was very carefully planned to make the whole set very visible and readable with in the round audience seating, there wasn't a bad seat in the house. You were able to read a great deal about Kyra's life in the set of her apartment."

O+E
Winner of the 2018 Teeny Award: “Everything Old is Cool Again!”

"It’s no accident that Julia Hayes Welch’s scenic design resembles an operating theatre. (...) When it comes to this kind of un-revelatory revolution, in which a creative team plants a flag saying that, on their watch, civil and social progress will only move forward, we’re all in it together. That’s why Welch’s set design reflects the expansive communality of Greek amphitheaters, in which the steeply raked seats put everyone in close to the action—and also close to each other. "

AN OCTOROON
"ArtsWest’s production never falters, from performance to direction to Matthew Webb’s excellent lighting design to Julia Hayes Welch’s magnificently menacing scenic design, a bric-a-brac mountain of darkly colored artifacts (and one very white rope). http://jetspacemagazine.com/the-painful-joyful-wild-ride-of-intimans-barbecue/
"The set-design was perfect for the play - the backdrop/canvas of the outdoors was high enough to take the viewer out of the theater - real trees onstage and dry grass enhanced the outdoor feel. Actors used every part of the realistic-looking set to their benefit - there was not too much, or too little scenery - just enough to allow the audience to focus on the story, and not detract. The set of a picnic shelter was like many I'd seen around in the neighborhood the play is performed in and established the correct sense of place - this was not a posh-high-end park, but neither was it completely trashed...when the time lapsed in the second scene, pieces of litter, broken swing, graffiti, and switch of trash can to "recycling" can helped tell the story and make a statement about change with no words. Open slats over the picnic shelter allowed light to come in, but still gave a sense of shelter. Really felt part of the actors world in every scene."

THE THINGS ARE AGAINST US

COLD EMPTY TERRIBLE
"The scenic design by Julia Welch is beautiful. She brings to life a stage where past, present, and future meet at their seams in hanging lights, flowing material, and heavy gilded doorways. The asymmetric window into the floorboards with dynamic video scenery visible through its panes is a nice touch. It is able to function both as a metaphorical window into different temporalities and a literal one into each varying scene."

THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT
"A tellingly grim set evoking some abandoned factory in the nowhere-afterlife of Purgatory."

THE SKRIKER
"I was blown away by the set for The Skriker. From the minute the audience walked in the doors to the lobby of the space, they were transported into the eerie, fantastical world of the play. The design was simple, beautiful and effective."

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
"Julia's virtual reality forest made from the innards of computers was stunning and communicated the concept of the show while helping tell the story."

"Julia Welch's set initially features two wooden doorways framing a curtain that soon gives way to mobile wood platforms holding colorful wire simulations of trees and bushes. The mobility allows for quick scene changes and maximizes the simulation of a forest environment with a minimum of material."
